Now when you think about great actor/director relationships you think of Dicaprio/Scorcesse or Depp/Burton,but why doesn't anyone think about Adam Sandler and Dennis Duggan. They have made 4 memorable comedies together like You Don't Mess With The Zohan,I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry(Which I Find Underated to the max!),Big Daddy, and my personal favorite Happy Gilmore. So does Grown Ups get added to the list?Surprisingly Yes!I liked it better than Zohan and Chuck and Larry. But the one big problem to this film is that there is absolutley no plot what so ever. It's just 4 SNL buddies reuniting plus Kevin James pretending to be the beloved Chris Farley, but don't worry it works.
But if i can find some story to this film, this is what i got out of it...5 basketball buddies for 30 years(Sandler,Rock,Schneider,James, and Spade)reunite for their old coach's(The Heartwarming Blake Clark)funeral. After the funeral the buddies and their families rent the summer house they visited every summer when they were little. The 5 Buds just need to chill.Lenny(Sandler)is a big shot movie producer who has the most spoiled kids imaginable and a big shot fashion Designer Wife(The annoying Salma Hyek).Kurt(Rock)is a house-husband whoose family doesnt treat him with any respect, even his pregnant wife(The very funny Maya Rudolph from SNL).Rob(Schneider)is actually the person with a normal life but is shocked when coach dies.Eric(James)is a frustrated father who has a wife(The Miscast Maria Bello who should've been Leah Remini from King Of Queens)who is obsessed with breast feeding their 4-year old son.And Marcus(Spade)who is a wise cracking un-employed loser who likes to party all the time.
Alright let me start with the cons.I think the chemistry between the husbands and wives was terrible. James and Bello have terrible chemistry.Sandler and Hayek are so mismatched it was as if Sandler and Hayek had a one night stand and had a baby then "fell in love".But Rudolpph and Rock have the best chemistry. The kids in this film are so Freakin annoying as hell.Sandler's kids complain about not havin Vos water and there is this one scene where Sandler's daughter finally finds out there isnt a tooth fairy and flips out so overdramatically.James's kids are so spoiled as well .Every time the boy was on screen he was trying to steal every scene by craving his mother's breast milk , and it got old fast.James's daughter in one scene is eating cake with her fingers and when Bello tells her niceley to use a fork she also flips out so overdramatically.Like i said there is no plot , but the comedy works for the , most part. There are unnessacrry characters in this film like Rudolph's mother who was trying way too hard to be funny. Also Scnheider's character supposedly has 3 other daughters who i felt should have not been in this film even though they were gorgeous. There jokes in this film that do fall flat like, farting in a cup, attempting to skip a rock but instead accensentally throwing it at your son's stomach, and pretending that the moths didnt die.I also felt like the ending left me unsatisfied trying to push a stupid moral at the end.The film wasnt even serious until the last 5 minutes.
For the Performances,Sandler and James were mostly funny.Rob Schneider i thought was trying to give a mostly serious performance and it kind of worked.Chris Rock (surprisingly)was painfully underused.David Spade stole every scene he was in , even though he was a one note character every scene he was in i just could'nt stop laughing.Collin Quinn plays a laughable villian who is very immature.Tim Meadows makes an hesterical cameo at the end as the other black guy.And Steve Buscehmi was hysterical in the 3 scenes he was in.Duggan's ex-wife Joyce Van Patten is actually really good as Schneider's 76 year-old wife.
Even though this film has alot of reconizable flaws it still kept me very entertained and surprised. The boys were back in town and they ceased to dissapoint.
7/10
