This summer has been filled with tons wannabee laugh out loud comedies(Get Him To The Greek,MacGruber, and Despicable Me just to name a few). But Dinner for Schmucks directed by Jay Roach(Austin Powers Trilogy,Meet The Parents)actually lives up to the hype.
Tim(Paul Rudd)is an ambitious businessman who wants a job promotion from his boss(Star Trek's Bruce Greenwood). But the only way to do that is to invite a complete idiot to a dinner filled with other idiots competing for a trophy for the biggest schmuck hence "Dinner For Schmucks". Tim is shocked and very skeptical about doing this but a miracle from God comes and gives Tim a lonely/very goofy IRS agent Barry(Steve Carrell) who got hit by Tim's Porsche. Now i know this sounds like one the most predictable/cliched films in the history of cinema.Well it seems like it but it has Nonstop Comedy and a very well executed Heart to it that makes you automatically fall in love with it.
1 flaw i had with it was yes at times was it predictable. That's It.
For the Performances.Rudd and Carrell make the perfect comedy duo and make for some of the most outrageously funny scenes Ive seen this year.Rudd is the perfect straight man to Carrell's love able goofball. And Carrell surprises us all not by only giving us the best comedic performance in the film but actually one of the best dramatic performances too.Jermaine Clement(Flight Of The Conchords)is hilarious as Kieran the insightful(yet shocking)artist.Zach Galifinakis(The Hangover)Is a scream as Thurman, Bary's co worker and his wife's love affair. Also Kristen Schall(Toy Story 3)is really funny as Rudd's assistant Susanna. Also Ron Livingston(Office Space) and Larry Wilmore(I Love You Man) had some hysterical 1 liners as Rudd's Co-Worker's.
What i loved about Dinner For Schmucks besides that it is hysterically funny but it's also because it has some very good dramatic scenes including a heartbreaking Barry Back Story that will make you jerk a tear here and there.I also loved how freaking creative it was , especially about Barry's Mouseter-peices what at first seems really creepy, but at times the cinematography of them especially in the beginning by cinematographer Jim Denault(She's Out Of My League)is very memorable.
Overall Dinner For Schmucks is the must see comedy of not only the summer but the year.I swear this movie will have you laughing so hard you'll need an oxygen tank.
9/10
